01 // FUEL ECONOMY BASICS
Getting an accurate MPG reading
Fill the tank consistently
For the most accurate result, fill the tank to a consistent level, record the odometer, drive normally, and calculate MPG at the next refill.
Use actual fuel added
Divide the miles driven by the gallons required to refill the tank. Dashboard MPG displays may differ slightly from hand-calculated results.
Average multiple tanks
Weather, traffic, idling, tire pressure, driving style, and trip length can change fuel economy. Averaging several tanks gives a better long-term picture.
FORMULA
Miles per gallon
MPG = Miles Driven ÷ Gallons Used
Gallons Per 100 Miles = 100 ÷ MPG
Example: 320 miles ÷ 12.5 gallons = 25.6 MPG.
