What P0442 means
P0442 means the evaporative-emissions system cannot maintain the expected pressure or vacuum during a small-leak test.
Loose connections, cracked hoses, sealing problems, purge or vent faults, and fuel-cap sealing issues are common possibilities.

What can trigger P0442?
Fuel-cap or sealing problem
A damaged cap seal or filler-neck sealing surface may allow vapor leakage.
Small hose or line leak
Cracked or disconnected EVAP plumbing can produce a small leak.
Purge or vent valve leakage
A valve that does not seal correctly can prevent the system from holding pressure or vacuum.
Canister or component leak
Physical damage can allow vapor to escape.

Start here
Inspect the fuel cap and filler neck
Check the cap seal, installation, and sealing surface.
Inspect EVAP plumbing
Look for cracks, loose fittings, damaged hoses, and disconnected lines.
Test purge and vent valves
Verify that commanded valves seal and flow as expected.
Smoke-test the system
A controlled smoke test can help locate leaks that are difficult to see.
