U0100

TORQDEX // POWERTRAIN DTC

Lost Communication With ECM/PCM A

One or more vehicle modules have lost communication with the engine or powertrain control module.

CODE FAMILY Network
SEVERITY HIGH
DRIVEABILITY MAY PREVENT STARTING
COMMON AREA ECM/PCM / CAN Network

00 // CODE DEFINITION

What U0100 means

U0100 indicates that another control module cannot communicate normally with the primary engine or powertrain controller.

The ECM/PCM may have lost power or ground, the CAN network may be damaged, or the controller itself may be offline.

01 // COMMON SYMPTOMS

What you may notice

Check-engine or multiple warning lights
Possible crank-no-start or no-start condition
ECM/PCM may be unavailable on a scan tool

02 // COMMON CAUSES

What can trigger U0100?

POWER

ECM/PCM power or ground loss

A blown fuse, relay, wiring fault, or poor ground can take the controller offline.

NETWORK

CAN communication fault

Open or shorted network wiring can prevent communication with the ECM/PCM.

MODULE

ECM/PCM or network module fault

An internally failed module may stop communicating or disrupt the bus.

03 // DRIVEABILITY

Can I keep driving with U0100?

SEVERITY HIGH
MAY PREVENT STARTING

Use caution. A high-severity fault can affect engine, transmission, electrical, or emissions-system operation. If the vehicle is running poorly, overheating, losing oil pressure, flashing the check-engine light, or entering reduced-power mode, avoid continued driving until the cause is diagnosed.

04 // DIAGNOSTIC ORDER

Start here

01

Attempt communication with the ECM/PCM

Determine whether the controller is completely offline or intermittently unavailable.

02

Check ECM/PCM power and grounds

Verify fuses, relays, ignition feeds, constant power, and ground circuits.

03

Inspect CAN wiring

Check the network branch between the ECM/PCM and the rest of the vehicle.

04

Evaluate the wider network

Determine whether other modules are also offline before condemning the ECM/PCM.

05 // COMMON REPAIR AREAS

Systems commonly involved

These are common areas associated with U0100. Testing should confirm the actual fault before parts are replaced.

POWER

ECM/PCM power or ground loss

A blown fuse, relay, wiring fault, or poor ground can take the controller offline.

NETWORK

CAN communication fault

Open or shorted network wiring can prevent communication with the ECM/PCM.

MODULE

ECM/PCM or network module fault

An internally failed module may stop communicating or disrupt the bus.

06 // DIAGNOSTIC PRINCIPLE

Confirm the fault before replacing parts

U0100 identifies a condition detected by the vehicle control system. It does not automatically identify one failed component. Test the affected system before replacing parts.
