TORQDEX // DRIVABILITY DIAGNOSTIC
Stalls While Driving
Diagnose an engine that shuts off while the vehicle is moving by checking crank and cam signals, power supply, fuel delivery, ignition, module communication, charging voltage, and intermittent wiring faults.
01 // WHAT IT MEANS
Understanding the symptom
A stall while driving is more serious than an idle-only stall because the fault may interrupt one of the systems required to keep the engine running under all conditions.
Crank signals, power feeds, grounds, fuel pressure, ignition, charging voltage, and network communication should be evaluated around the exact stall event.
02 // QUICK CHECKS
Check these first
Start with simple observations and scan data before moving into deeper testing.
Note whether the dash stays powered
Loss of cluster and accessories suggests a broader electrical interruption.
Watch RPM during the stall
A sudden loss of RPM signal before the engine stops can point toward crank-signal failure.
Check restart behavior
Immediate restart, delayed restart, or no restart provides useful diagnostic direction.
Check history codes
Crank, cam, voltage, communication, and fuel faults may be stored.
03 // SYSTEMS TO CHECK
Common systems involved
Engine-speed input
Loss of crankshaft position information can immediately stop spark and injection.
PCM and ignition supply
Relay, fuse, ignition-switch, ground, or wiring faults can shut the engine off.
Fuel-pressure continuity
An intermittent pump or control fault can cause the engine to stop under load.
Control-module communication
Critical communication loss can disrupt torque and engine operation.
04 // DIAGNOSTIC ORDER
Diagnose it in this order
Capture data during the stall
Monitor RPM, voltage, fuel pressure, throttle, and communication status.
Check crank and cam signals
Determine whether engine-position data disappears before the stall.
Check PCM power and grounds
Inspect relays, ignition feeds, grounds, and connectors.
Verify fuel-pressure continuity
Watch pressure before, during, and after the event.
Review charging and network faults
System voltage or module communication may collapse intermittently.
05 // TEST RESULTS
What the results may indicate
Check crank-signal circuit
Sensor, wiring, connector, or module input may be failing.
Check main electrical supply
Battery, ignition-switch, relay, fuse, or ground faults may be interrupting vehicle power.
Check fuel delivery
Pump, relay, module, wiring, or supply problems become primary suspects.
06 // COMMON MISTAKE
Don't diagnose a driving stall from idle testing alone
Heat, vibration, road load, electrical demand, and harness movement can expose faults that never appear in the shop.
