What can trigger P0171?
Vacuum or intake leak
Unmetered air entering the engine can force fuel trims strongly positive.
Low fuel delivery
Low pressure, weak pump output, restrictions, or injector problems can create a lean mixture.
Incorrect airflow measurement
A contaminated or biased MAF sensor may under-report incoming air.
Pre-sensor exhaust leak
Outside air entering the exhaust before the oxygen sensor can distort feedback.

Review short- and long-term fuel trim
Compare trims at idle and higher RPM to help distinguish vacuum leaks from fuel-delivery or airflow problems.
Inspect for unmetered air
Check intake plumbing, vacuum hoses, PCV components, gaskets, and related connections.
Evaluate airflow data
Compare MAF or calculated load data with expected engine operating conditions.
Verify fuel pressure
Check pressure and delivery under the conditions where the lean fault occurs.
